Interesting Malaysian Plate Number
While so many people enjoy having a unique registration plate number, many know very little about how the JPJ comes up with the sequence of numbers and letters. Let’s take a closer look at the current algorithm that is used when issuing new plates for automobiles in Malaysia with the exception of Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Putrajaya. The first character in a plate number represents the state or territory. Some examples of this are “W” for Kuala Lumpur, “A” for Perak, “B” for Selangor and “P” for Penang.
The plate number would thenadd four digits to the state/territory letter such as W 1234. It’s also important to note that the number sequence cannot begin with a leading zero, also both the letters “i” and “o” are omitted from use due to the possibility of mixing up the number “one” with the letter “l” and the number “zero” with the letter “o”. The letter Z is used for the Malaysian military vehicles.
The first Kuala Lumpur plate issued using the current plate number algorithm was W 1, it was issued by the JPJ in 1974. The registration plate numbers would increase incrementally until W 9999 was reached. Then the next plate number would be WA 1, this seven digit series ended with WYY 9999 on September 26, 2013. The Kuala Lumpur plate number series was expanded to an 8 character series by adding a letter to the end of the 7 digit series. The first plate number issued was WA 1 A and will continue until WYY 9999 Y is reached. Here are a few examples of how the new 8 digit series will progress. (examples of how the series will progress WA 1 Y –> WB 1 A –> WB 9999 Y –> WC 9999 Y ) If your interested and want to learn more about Malaysian plate numbers, visit our Plate News page.
